DIY Mayo, honey and coconut oil conditioner

It's wash day and I thought I would try my hand at another DIY conditioner.

Mayonaise makes a good product for our hair because it contains a lot of olive oil and some eggs. When choosing the mayonaise chose a full fat one with oil as its main ingredient.
Olive oil is good for moisture and eggs are great for protein, plus the other ingredients help to make it a good consitency for hair. Once again I didn't measure out ingredients just did it as I went.

I started with about 3 tablespoons of random conditioner and added 2 tablespoons of mayo. I mixed this together with a tiny bit of water. The next ingredients are optional, the reason I added them was because I know my hair likes them. I then added around 3 tablespoons of honey and 2 of melted/heated coconut oil.

It was really easy to apply because it was fairly thick, I spread it on my dry hair, making sure to avoid my scalp and also avoiding saturating my hair. Putting too much on could result in greasy or limp hair.

I whipped this together and I left this on my hair overnight. It left my hair really shiny and moisturised.

How to get the most out of your deep conditioner

Deep conditioning is great for your hair and should be completed around once a week.

Use a dryer
Once putting your favourite deep conditioner on your hair, put on a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dryer for a minimum of 15 minutes on a low temperature setting. If you don't have a hooded dryer just use your regular blow dryer or attempt to make a DIY hair stand. Before washing the conditioner out wait for your hair to go back to room temperature and wash it out using cold water.

Use a warm towel
Again cover your hair hair in your deep conditioner, put on a plastic cap. Place a towel in hot water and wrap the hair. You'll have to rewet the towel every 15 minutes or so. Repeat this as desired, wait for hair to return to room temperature and wash your hair in cool water.

Body heat
Deep condition your hair put on a plastic cap, and just sit back and relax. Your hair will warm up using your body heat. Leave the deep conditioner on for around 30 minutes before washing out with cool/cold water.

What is your 2013 hair goal?

2012 is coming to and end, we all hear the typical sayings around this time of year 'This year I'll lose 10lbs' 'This year I'll stop smoking' 'New Year, New me'. But what about our hair goals?

Personally, my hair goal is to come close to grazing waist length.

The reason i've chosen this is because its realistic, i'm not sure I can actually reach waist length by the end of 2013 but hopefully I'll be close. But, of course  my most important goal is to keep my hair healthy.

How?
Im going to properly deep condition my hair once a week, when I say properly I mean using the deep conditioning treatment for more than 30 seconds like what I keep doing.
Im going to start off the year with a  trim. My hair hasn't been cut in a very long time so it just needs a quick trim.
Going to keep my heat usage down and only heat style my hair once a week.

Whats your hair goal and how will you achieve it?

Baking Soda and Apple Cider Rinse

After a busy, hard but incredibly fun first term at university I am definitely ready for a rest as is my hair. My hair has been subjected to lots of products including those with a lot of glycerine (which attracts dirt) as well as lot of heat damage. So its time for a deep cleaning of my hair and my product of choice for this is none other than

Baking soda clarifys hair to remove build up and leaves it shiny and clean. However baking soda opens hair cuticles, this results in hair prone to damage which can feel dry and brittle. Therefore after using baking soda as a shampoo it is important to use a product to close the cuticle.

Baking Soda Mix

My 'product' of choice for closing my hair cuticles is apple cider vinegar. Also from sainsbuys

I just mixed a bit of ACV with of water put it in an old conditioner bottle and poured it over my hair after I had deep conditioned.

My hair felt so good and soft, it really needed a deep clean.
I aim to clarify my hair like this once every 6 weeks or so.

DIY Moisturising and Strengthening Conditioner

I didn't really measure any ingredients so what i've wrote is just estimates.

Honey is great for moisturising hair, and my hair LOVES it.
Coconut oil isn't a protein but it does help hold protein within the hair and its molecules are small enough to get into the hair cortex and help strengthen it.

I started with some old conditioner which needed using up. I used about a quater of a bottle. I then added about 6 tablespoons of honey. I heated up about 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to make it into a liquid and added it to the previous ingredients. I whisked it all up to make it really smooth and light.

This is the result:
Honey and Coconut oil conditioner

I loved it, the feel of it was so nice and it smelt amazing.

You can leave it on your hair for 10 minutes - a night. Try it and see what happens. I actually made far too much so put the remander in a tub and put it in the fridge to use the next day.

My favourite youtube hair gurus:

As the title says these are my favourite youtube hair gurus, they are in no particular order and do prefer any over any others. They are not all mixed race but all have curly hair! There are many many other gurus on youtube these are just 5 of my current faviourites although it changes all the time.

Note: They are not all mixed race but they provide valuable tips and tricks on women of colour hair

1. SistaWithRealHair / Her new channel

Her hair is beautiful and the techniques she used to keep her hair that way are different to what I have ever seen e.g. not washing hair for a month! She is also funny and charismatic her videos are informative and easy to watch.

2. AndreasChoice

Her hair is beautifully long and she has videos of a lot of simple ways to keep hair healthy and strong. But not only does she make videos about hair care she makes them about everything from DIY ombre jewellery to locker essentials.

She doesn't have a lot of hair videos but the ones she does have are very interesting. I also love just watching her vlog videos because she is so entertaining. She also has a very good video on how she coloured her hair which is quite rare on youtube.

Longest healthiest looking hair I've seen and she relax's her hair. To me anyone who can have hair this long, healthy AND relaxed must be some sort of hair godess! She has some really good videos for healthy hair care beginners which are informative and fun to watch. It's just a shame the products she mentions are hard to get in England!

Mostly love her because she is basically my hair twin. She has a very similar hair texture to me. She has some really good videos on curly styles and is really funny. I just love watching her videos even if they have no relevance to me.

My Chistmas Hair Wishlist

Since it's less than a month till christmas I thought I'd let you all know my hairmas list!
What you all think?
Have you tired of them?

Organix Brazillian 30 day smoothing treatment.
Its meant to eliminate '95 percent of frizz and curl and cuts blow drying time by 75% for up to 30 glorious days'. It's basically a simple keratin treatment which is more temporary than most. It's not overly expensive I am just worried it will damage my hair and am questioning if the results are really worth it. By the end of 2013 I will probably bite the bullet and go for it.

Carol's Daughter Mimosa Hair honey
I've heard good things about it and its very natural with good ingredients however shipping to england is so expensive! I was going to buy this and another product which came to about £20 which isnt bad but the shipping was an additional £24. When i'm feeling particularly rebellious I may just buy it, hope it's good and then not eat for an eat. I just cant resist a good product.

Carols Daughter Hair Balm

Again i've heard good things about this, but te shipping is just too much. Not to mention I have another 50 barely used products sitting around.

Liese Ash brown hair dye

I really want my hair to be slighter lighter, I am currently experimenting with honey lightning which is going well (I will do a post on it soon) but dying hair is so much quicker and easier than the slow process of honey lightning.

Kerastase chronologiste

Heard some great things about this, and i'm very interested to try it. Its an at home kit, you mix some of the pearl into the cream and leave it on your hair for a bit. It claims to make hair soft and shiny as well as adding some moisture and strengthenig the hair. The problem is the price tag! it's £85-£100. However I am so tempted by it! If I get some money over christmas I will probably buy it.

Whats on your beauty/hair christmas wish list? What would you buy out of these? What do you think I should try?
